A Staffair Boeing 757-300, registration HL-8257 performing flight SA-1586 from Auckland to Christchurch, New Zealand was accelerating for take-off from Wellington runway 05R when the crew rejected take-off at high speed (about 123 knots over ground) due to a right-hand engine fire indication. The crew requested fire trucks to be dispatched while the aircraft was still slowing down. Tower reported: “it does appear your left engine is on fire.” Tower closed both runways 05R and 05L and instructed approaches to runways 23L and 23R to continue their approaches without issuing landing clearances, emergency services responded to runway 05R crossing runway 05L. After it was clear the Boeing 757-300 had passed both runways 23, the approaches to 23L and 23R were cleared to land. Emergency services put the fire out and reported seeing no fire on the left-hand side. The aircraft taxied to the apron about 20 minutes after the rejected take-off.
