Part 4: Autonomous activities

Things to think about, research and discuss:

  • Have you ever experienced a technical problem while you have been flying? If so, explain what had happened.
  • Have you ever been on an airliner which experienced a technical problem? If so, explain what happened.
  • What are a passenger’s rights if they are on an aircraft which experiences technical problems?
  • Have you ever had to make an emergency landing? What were the circumstances?
  • How did you prepare for technical problems during your training?
  • How confident do you feel at dealing with an engine failure?
  • How well would you say you understand the mechanical and technical aspects of the aircraft you fly?
  • Have you ever experienced problems with navigation equipment? What happened? How did you resolve the problem?
  • Have you ever experienced problems with communication equipment? What happened? How did you resolve the problem?

Try carrying out some internet searches for, “emergency landing.” Would you agree that the media dramatize these incidents unnecessarily?

Skybrary has numerous articles relating to technical issues in aviation and is a good source of technical vocabulary: https://www.skybrary.aero

The UK Civil Aviation Authority is a good source of incident reports: https://www.caa.co.uk/home/ – as well as many other useful documents

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau is good as well: https://www.atsb.gov.au/publications/safety-investigation-reports/?mode=Aviation
